I remember a long time ago when I was growing up, my first ever ‘horse’ was a miniature mule named Jack. He was adorable! And being new to owning my own equine, I was so excited when I saved up all of my money from doing chores around the house and my mom took me to K-Mart (remember K-Mart?!?!?!) And I was able to spend my hard earned money on horse stuff. The K-Mart had a small section where the sold horse stuff. This was my first introduction to a tack store, and I was in heaven!
I remember one of the first things I bought was a bottle of Absorbine Liniment. And to this day, the smell of the liniment takes me back to my childhood of that first time I saw a bunch of horse products, and buying that first bottle of liniment. And over the years, I continued to use it on my horses, I love this stuff!

And then I started thinking about the liniment again recently, mainly because I will be riding Plezant a LOT more during November. And I thought this might be something helpful for you too, to talk about horse liniments! Have you ever used a liniment on your horse? Do you now what it does, or how it works? If not, let me enlighten you!

What Is Horse Liniment Anyway?
Liniment for horses has been around for as long as I can remember. And probably long before that even. A liniment is a topical product that is meant to ease pain in muscles, and joints. Once applied, it produces a feeling of warmth to the area it is applied too. Liniment can be helpful when applied after a workout to help increase the blood flow to the area. So applying liniment to legs after a workout can help your horse stay comfortable and not get stiff.
Plus it smells really good, well I think it does! Most liniments have menthol in them. Which gives it a very minty smell. If you like minty smells, you will like the way liniment smells.
So can you see why a liniment might be helpful when planning on training, or having your horse in a regular workout schedule? This is why I like to have it on hand, and make it a part of my grooming routine, especially in November! At the end of a workout session, liniment can help to reduce the risk of sore muscles as well as decrease inflammation.
Where To Apply Liniment
The typical area that you apply liniment is on your horses lower legs. You can apply it directly to the legs, or you can put some on a brush and brush it on. And if you want to get a little more out of the liniment, you can also wrap your horses legs which will help to keep the heat in for a longer period of time. When you first apply it, it provides a cooling sensation and then it gets warm. It’s a very cool sensation. But you don’t want to put it on an area of broken skin, because it can sting.

You can also pour some liniment into water, and have a liniment body wash, and then rub it all over him. I like to dip my brush into it, and run the brush over Plezant’s back as well as his legs. Just be sure not to get it on the les hairy areas, like under his tail, or between his legs. I find that after I have rubbed Plezant down with the liniment, he is nice and shiny too, without leaving his hair slippery like a shine spray. Just an extra benefit of what liniment can do.
If I have a longer arena work out session, I find that a light liniment bath can be very refreshing for my horse and help to prevent muscle soreness. And riding without stirrups for extended periods of time can cause your horse to get stiff. So I think it’s a good idea to do what you can and prevent any stiffness, or soreness, so you can continue to get through your no stirrup rides!
Types of Liniments
Gone are the days of only one liniment to choose from. A good example of this is over at Corro. They actually have a Top-Rated tab on their website, where different equestrian have rated the best of the best products. And I am very happy to report that my favorite, and the one I still use 30 years after the first time I tried it is at the top of the favorites list.
Liniments now come in liquid, and gel formulas and there are many to choose from! Here are my favorites.
Absorbine Veterinary Liniment Liquid
Like I said before, I LOVE this liniment! It can be used to treat inflamed joints, sore muscles, and strained tendons. And it also helps to treat common fungal and bacterial infections. This is why I have Absorbine liniment in my first aid kit, as well as my grooming tote.

Liniment includes fungal and bacterial disinfectant to clean infections and soothe irritated areas of hoof and skin. Along with natural herbs and essential oils that provide anti-inflammatory and antiseptic qualities to promote healing and relieve pain. It’s also affordable too. A 16 ounce bottle lasts a very long time, and is less than $15.00 at Corro.

And there is even a gel formula now too! This really allows you to target an area you want to treat.
Vetrolin Liniment
This is a close second place for me. And it is even more affordable at around $13.00 for a 32 ounce bottle! Vetrolin liniment helps soothe sore muscles, increase blood flow and reduce stiffness for greater comfort. It soothes aching joints and muscles and relieves minor stiffness, soreness and inflammation. It also helps stimulate blood flow to sore ankles, knees and tendons for leg pain relief.

And Vetrolin works great as a refreshing body wash, refreshing body brace or at full strength to reduce swelling. It also smells good, like the Absorbine liniment!
It even comes in a handy spray bottle too, which makes it really easy to apply.
Corro Your Once Source For All Things Horse
Corro really is a horse superstore. Not only do they carry both of my favorite liniments, but they have an entire collection page dedicated to all sorts of liniments! They actually have 2 entire pages dedicated to liniments. Honestly, I never knew there were that many to choose from.
And with all of the choices they offer, I am sure you will find a product that you love, and are dedicated too, like I am with my favorites. It’s nice to have options, wouldn’t you agree?
And as something extra special that Corro is doing – they are sponsoring a prize in my No Stirrups November Challenge! Corro is donating a $50.00 gift card that will be given away at the end of the challenge! How cool is this?!?!?

I have been ordering all of the supplements I feed my boys from Corro for over a year now, and they have never disappointed me. I know that I can count on them to get my orders to me as scheduled. And when I need something in a hurry, they ship ultra fast too. So, if you are thinking of picking up a liniment in time for the challenge, I am confident you can count on Corro to get it to you super fast.
