So in a previous post I shared with you my goal setting process as it is related to what I will need in order to get my horse(s) to some shows starting next year. I also broke down several different areas of what the costs will be, and what the total cost will ultimately end up being. If you read that article and saw the cost, I am curious, did your eyes bug out of your head? The end part was to determine how much money I will need to make this happen.
And that is where we pick up today, my plan of how am I going to earn that money without using the money from my regular job. To some the amount of money needed may seem unattainable, to others it may be nothing. To me, it is a big deal, however I know that I can do this, and I know that I can earn the money. I have done it before, and I will show you how I intend to do it this time.
Earning Extra Money for My Goal
Over the course of the next 9 months I need to make $8,730.00, but to make this really easy, I will round it up to $9,000.00. That means I need to earn $1,000 a month. And since I have a way to earn this money, this plan is going into play immediately. That makes it seem more realistic and do-able, don’t you think?
The easiest way for me to make some money quickly is to build some horse jumps. So this is what I intend to do. I have had very good luck with building complete jumps, gates, standards, and even small courses of jumps and then offering them for sale on Craigslist, and EBay. So starting tonight, I will begin making the jumps, and then hopefully by this weekend I will have three ads ready to list for both Craigslist and EBay. One ad will be for 4’ standards, 1 ad will be for 5’ standard, and 1 ad will be for a small course of schooling jumps. When I list ads on Craigslist I do very well. I will usually end up selling the jumps I have listed, along with having several orders for custom creations. It gets busy, but I love when this happens. And this time I am giving people what they want.
If You Build it, The Orders Will Come
One thing I have noticed when I am building jumps with the sole intention of selling them….people always want 5 foot standards, and 10 foot poles. So I have listened, and that is the set I will be building. I think in the past I was always afraid of the initial investment in the materials, so I never did it. But after multiple times of saying “No, sorry, I don’t have those right now, but I can make them.” I was losing out on the instant sale. So this time, that is what I made.
Unfortunately this means that my work day will not end at 5:15 pm as it typically does. Now it means I will come home from my day job, eat dinner, clean stalls, groom and feed horses, and then out to the garage to work for a few hours each night until my jumps are done, and ready to be presented for sale. So even though this means I will basically be working a part time job, it will be worth it because I am earning money! It’s like bonus money! And it is a lot more money than I would be making at a real part-time job.
For example, if I worked a part time job for an extra 20 hours a week at $10.00 an hour, that is only $200.00, before taxes, per week. After takes, that would be around $360.00 for 2 weeks. On the flip side, I can build 2 sets of these jumps in 2 weeks and earn $1400.00. And I have the added benefit of working from my home. So I can take a break, go inside and be with my family, and I am my own boss. This does mean I have to be dedicated though. It is really easy to think I worked enough for the day, so I can just work extra hard tomorrow. But with that mind set, I would never get anything done, and my goal will turn into a pipe dream. So I have to be dedicated to m cause, and I need to do the work.
And just like my goal setting for going to the horse shows, I also set goals for what I want to be able to sell for my horse jumps. Will it happen? Yes, although maybe not as I am anticipating, but it always happens. So this is how my goal will look for my horse jump sales:
Setting the Sales Goal
4 foot standards (a pair) $75.00 (5 pair) = $375.00
5 foot standards (a pair) $100.00 (5 pair) = $500.00
1 Set of 5 foot jumps with 10 foot rails $900.00 (1 set) = $900.00
1 set of 4 foot jumps with 10 foot rails $750.00 (1 set) = $750.00
Total goal income for August: $2525.00 – supplies ($500.00) =$2025.00
And just like that, a sales goal is created!
You may be wondering why I set my goal like that, and what happens if I don’t sell anything? From past experience of placing these ads, I have a good feeling for what I will be able to sell, and then I always get people who want something more custom created for them. And hey, if you live in the area, I would be happy to sell some jumps to you too! (Wink -wink!)
Now once I have the goal set, then I start building the pieces of the jumps. I will build several sets of standards, enough to take pictures of a four foot complete set, and a five foot complete set. Then I can take separate pieces and create more ads, for example a set of standards, or just a gate.
Visualize Your Goal
The idea is to plan, and think ahead in order to be successful with my goal. Time will tell if I am successful or not. But I find I am much more motivated if I have a clear picture of what I want to achieve. So for this goal, I have pictures of the items I want taped up in my office space, as well as my work space of my garage. It is proven that if you visualize what your goal is, you are more likely to achieve it. So whatever your end goal is, take a picture of it, and make sure you can see it every single day! Cement the idea in your mind that you will get the item that you want.
Slow and Steady Wins The Race
You are training for a marathon, not a sprint. Keep that in mind when setting your goal. If you try to push it too fast, and set unrealistic expectations you will be disappointed. It’s ok to dream big, but make sure you have given yourself enough time to meet that goal. If you have never tried this before, start with a small goal, and build up from there. With every success, you will build your confidence, and fuel your inner fire to believe in yourself, and truly know you are able to achieve whatever it is you set out accomplish.
If you have a goal in mind, jot it down, and find the item it is that you want. Take a picture of it, or print it off from your computer. Picture yourself with it. And then get busy in your plan of how you are going to make that goal a reality. You can do this, you just have to believe in yourself that you can.
