With social media sites like Instagram and Facebook, we have the ability to see what other equestrians do with their horses, and what they have. I love scrolling through Instagram, to see other horses and what their lives are like. But it’s kind of rose colored glasses that we are able to see these images.
A lot of them are highly edited, or shot as a photo shoot by a professional photographer. And when we see how awesome it is for others, it may get us down on what we have.
But going back to my post about learning to stay positive, you need to remember that you are pretty lucky for what you have too. If you have the ability to ride, whether it’s your own horse or not, you are very lucky. You have made your dream of riding happen.
So instead of focusing on the negative, and what you don’t have, why not focus on the positive, and make the most of what you do have.
Clean Your Tack
I don’t know about you, but I LOVE to clean my tack. To see a freshly cleaned saddle, bridle, and girth freshly cleaned and on my horse makes me really happy.
Cleaning your tack will give you almost instant gratification. When your tack is clean and conditioned, it is just so beautiful. So take some time to clean your tack, all of it. Clean your saddle, bridle, and everything else you use when you are riding your horse.
My favorite leather cleaner is Effax Leder-Combi. It works great for quickly cleaning leather. Leder-Combi does an effective job of cleaning and removing dirt and sweat. Also, it does not break down the stitching and leaves no residue on your tack. It isn’t the cheapest, but it is by far the best cleaner I have used on my tack. I’ve even used it on our leather couch!
And after my tack is clean, once a week or so I condition the leather with Effax Leder-Balsam. Oh my, this stuff smells amazing. Seriously, this is my most favorite product to use on all of my leather tack. Not only does it condition the leather, but it gives a little bit of a tacky surface to my saddle, which give a little extra ‘stick’, meaning I stay firmly in place in the tack!
Like the Leder-Combi, it isn’t the cheapest, but it is the best (in my opinion). And the container lasts forever. I just bought a full size container after trying it out in a small, tiny, sample size which I had for about 6 or 7 months. And I was going to buy the Voltaire Leather Balm, but when I smelled that product, it didn’t smell as good as the Leder Balsam, and the same size container cost twice as much. With the Leder Balsam, a little bit goes a long, long way and it works so well!
In case you are wondering, it is safe to use on calfskin leather too. My current saddle is a Dover’s Premier Victory RTF saddle which has calfskin flaps and the Leder Balsam is safe to use on it.
And if you aren’t sure if you want to invest that much money into 2 products for your tack cleaning ritual, Effax has a really cool leather care kit that includes both of these products as well as other Effax products and cleaning clots, a boot polisher and a sponge for about $38.00. This is how I tried out their products, and I have been hooked ever since!
Clean and Organize Your Tack Room
I think it goes without saying that I like to clean and organize my tack room, a lot. But having an organized tack room, with everything hanging up, and put away just looks so awesome that I can’t help myself!
It also helps you to see everything that you have, and makes it easier to get riding faster.
And if you don’t have a tack room, do you have a grooming tote? I bet you do. Clean out your grooming tote, and organize it! You can do the same thing if you have a tack locker, or trunk. And I think after you do it, you will be happy with your results.
If you are looking for a new grooming tote to hold all of your supplies, my favorite grooming tote is the Nobel Outfitters EquinEssential Collapsible Tote.
This thing holds soooooo much! It also has pockets all around the outside of the tote to hold extra, smaller stuff that you will inevitably need when you are grooming your horse.
I took out the center divider of mine, because well, I just didn’t like it. And this works better for me. But with the center divider in place you have even more organizational opportunities.
And once you buy the tote, you can go online to Nobel Outfitters (or equestrian, whatever they are called now) and you can choose a discipline patch to go on the front of your tote.
This is a good thing. Because with this tote being so popular with equestrians, you are likely to run into at least one other person who has a tote just like yours. By adding the discipline patch, you can personalize your tote to make it stand out as yours.
If you are constantly looking at photos of others, and wishing you had what they do, then do something about it.
If you want a riding arena, build one. Don’t focus on the negative and talk yourself out of why you can’t do it, but figure out how you can do it. This is what we did with my riding arena. First I made a list of everything I wanted it to be, and then I did the research to see how I could make this happen.
I didn’t get the footing that I wanted, but I make what I have work. And I think it looks pretty nice.
It also has helped me to get out and work with my horses more, because I have it. I call that a win-win!
If you aren’t happy with how your pasture looks, do something about it. If there are weeds instead of grass, get some pasture seed and take care of it. Sure it won’t be easy, but it will be worth it in the end.
If you don’t have a saddle, and want one, do something about it! Look for opportunities of how you can make some extra money so you can get it! I do this a LOT. And I have to say, when I have to really work at something in order to achieve my goal, like a new piece of tack, when I actually get it, it make it that much better and I appreciate the work that it took me to get that special item.
And don’t forget about contests. Sometimes, you can get something for nothing, sort of. Like right now Arena Saddles is hosting several giveaways through different equestrian blogs and Instagram influencers for a chance to get a FREE saddle! How cool is this??!?!?! And yes, I have been posting like a crazy woman in hopes that maybe, just maybe I will win one of their saddles. Hey, if you don’t try you can’t win right?
I am a firm believer in the fact that you are only limited by yourself. And you can get anything you want, if you are willing to put in the work. You just have to determine how much you are willing to do in order to get what it is that you want.
Make A Goals Sheet
And going a little deeper on the doing something, make a list of what you want to achieve. It doesn’t have to be big, it can be something small. And it doesn’t need to be a material thing. It can be a skill, or something you want to do better with your horse.
The important thing is to actually write down your goals. Did you know that if you write down something you want, you are more likely to achieve, or get it? It’s true! So get writing! Make a list of everything you want, or want to achieve. And then look at it, and figure out how you are going to make it happen.
And literally as I was writing this, I just wrote down that one of my goals is to win that Arena saddle #goals.
Don’t Just Wish – Do It!
Don’t just sit there and scroll through Instagram, or some other social media site and wish you could be like someone else, or have what someone else has, figure out a way to get what you want. Just Do It! You have nothing stopping you, other than yourself. Figure out what you want, and then figure out how you are going to reach that goal. It may not happen tomorrow, or the next day, but if you put in the work, you will achieve your goals and dreams!
So just like Nike says……Just do it!
