Best Brush for Manes and Tails
Over the many, many years I have had horses, I have tested and tried so many grooming items, from brushes to combs and everything in between. If there is something new out there for grooming, I have tried it.
I have been searching for a brush for manes and tails that will make my horse’s tail look fuller and not damage the hair. Like many horses, my horse is not blessed with a thick and luxurious tail. So I want to do everything I can to help him have a glorious tail, as well as his mane. But not all mane and tail brushes are created equally.
And when I think I have found something that will work, it doesn’t do what I am hoping it will. That is until I found this mane and tail brush.

Best Grooming Tools – BioMane Mane and Tail Brush
If you have been searching for a mane and tail brush that actually works, keep reading. The BioMane brush is a mane and tail brush that actually works. This is a lightweight brush that is comfortable to grip and is perfect for thoroughly brushing manes and tails.
An interesting thing about this brush is the bristle material and pattern are designed to get caught on knots and tangles, so you don’t break or damage the hair you are trying to detangle.

This brush may look similar to others, but trust me, it’s not like any other brush you have tried. Yes, there are many types of mane and tail brushes to choose from. But they aren’t all created equally.

And while other brushes may be cheaper, they aren’t helping you to get the best results for all of the time you spend grooming your horse. Believe me, I know firsthand what it’s like to do everything you can to improve a mane or tail.
After visiting the horse park and watching the show jumping, I became obsessed with the tails of the show jumpers.

They have the most beautiful, full tails I have ever seen. And no, they don’t use tail extensions. This is just from excellent care and grooming. I want to achieve this with my own horse. And I think I am on the way to being able to achieve this because now I have the best brush for the job.

Some horses are just blessed with great hair. But in order to help your horse, the most important first step is, of course, making sure your horse is getting what he needs from his feed. Proper nutrition is the most important thing you need to do first for your horse. As well as making sure he is in top health as well. But after that, you can focus on the grooming. So let’s start with learning how to brush that mane and tail.
How to Properly Brush Your Horse’s Mane (and Tail)
Having the best brush for your horse’s mane and tail is the first step. But you also have to be doing it correctly to get the biggest benefit of the brush.
Remove the Knots and Tangles First

Using your hands, go through your horse’s mane to remove any tangles or knots before you begin brushing your horse’s mane or tail. By using your hands first, you can remove the tangles that may have happened since the last time you brushed your horse.
Use a Detangler in a Fine Mist Sprayer

By spraying your horse’s mane with a spray detangler first, you will help the brush to do its job. Use a detangler in a sprayer with a fine misting action. You want to thoroughly mist the hair but not saturate it.
Start at the Ends

When you start brushing the mane, you start from the ends of the hair. By starting at the end, you will untangle any of the knots or tangles that have occurred, making it easier for the brush to do its job of brushing the hair. You want to brush in a downward stroke toward the ends of the mane. For the best results, work in small strokes about 6 to 8 inches.
This may be different than what you are used to doing. But by doing this, you will protect the mane, and this will result in less hair ripped out from the brush.
Work Your Way Up

By working through a set area of the mane, you will be able to work through any knots or tangles you might run into without ripping the knot out. If you do encounter a knot, set your brush down and work through the knot with your fingers.
Separate the Top of the Mane into Sections

When the hair starts to get thick, separate the thicker areas in half and work through the thicker hair a little bit at a time.
Brush From Underneath the Mane

This is when it is helpful to have the thicker sections of the mane broken up into smaller sections. With half of the hair moved out of the way, you can brush through smaller sections of hair, really focusing on the underneath hair. Or, the hair you don’t see. This is the area that can tend to get tangled more easily.
Other Mane and Taill Brushes
There are a lot of different brushes you can use on your horse’s mane and tail. And I have tried a lot of them. The closest one to the BioMane Brush that I could find was the Goody Hair Brush.

This is made for people. While it is similar because the bristles are similar (but not nearly as dense), the handle isn’t the same, which makes it a little more difficult to work through the mane and tail.

I have to say, this brush is worth the price. I am really impressed with how it works, and the fact that I’m not ripping out my horse’s mane every time I brush through it is a definite plus.

The BioMane Brush does everything that the makers claim. And I am happy to say, my horse’s manes have never looked better! I would highly recommend this brush to anyone who asks. And with the holiday shopping right around the corner, this would make an excellent, affordable, and thoughtful gift for any horse owner.

I always just started brushing from the bottom up, and I would grimace ripping her mane out. Definitely going to try running my fingers through first. Very intrigued about this brush, I am going to order it now. Thanks for the tips, Lisa!
I hope you like the brush, I think you will notice a difference, especially in the fullness factor. It’s pretty impressive! 🙂
