Fall Riding Essentials For The Adult Rider
The season has changed and in Colorado, fall is definitely here. That means it is time to put away the t-shirts and sunshirts and get out the warmer clothing. But I don’t run out and spend a lot of money on new riding clothes every season. I try to make the most of the clothes I already have. And when I do feel the need to go shopping (I do love to shop!) I will typically go to a thrift store to look for some new clothes. So today I thought I would run over to the Goodwill store on my lunch break to see if I could find some fall riding essentials!
I love finding a great deal. And going to the thrift store typically means I will find a good deal, or two. And I did pretty good today!
Let’s Go Shopping
When I go shopping, I usually try to do it on my lunch break while I am at work. I do this because where I live, well there aren’t any stores other than Wal-Mart. And if I want to go shopping, well that means a 45 minute drive to town. So I make the most of the time that I do have, and instead of eating lunch, I go shopping. This has been a real time saver for me. I can only go to one store typically. But if I plan out my week, I can get all of the shopping done that I need to while I am at work. This leaves me more time for home and horse related projects when I am at home.
So today I decided to use my lunch break to take a trip to Goodwill to find some warmer clothes to ride in.
The Goodwill store I go to is very nice. I should say the stuff the sell is really nice. I think it’s because of where it is located, and the people that live in this area give up a lot of really nice stuff, and normally these type of clothes would not be in my price range. Let me be honest, I will not pay top price for clothing. But I will buy second hand clothing at a great price!
So the Goodwill store that I go to has really good clothing and the prices are very affordable.
Fall Riding Essentials
So on my power shopping excursion, there were a few things I was looking for. I wanted to find a couple of long sleeve t-shirts, a sweater or two, a jacket, a heavier coat, and a fleece blanket, or fleece material. And this is what I found…
Sweater
This was a good deal, $4.99 for a nice sweater I can layer under.
Sweater
This was an even better deal, $2.49 thanks to the 50% off price tag!
Athletic Shirt
Again, another good deal, and only $4.99. Not something I would usually wear, but it is warm and stretchy!
Warm Socks
These were a little spendy, especially when I compare them to the sweaters. They were $3.99, but they are brand new. They are also really cute, and warm! They will work great to keep my toes warm while I am riding.
Gloves and Headband
These were each $1.00. My ears always get so cold, so even though this won’t match anything I own, my ears will be warm! And the gloves are texting gloves. So I can swipe through my phone and listen to a podcast (or two) while I am working in the barn. Both of these items were brand new. I always lose my gloves, so finding a pair for a dollar is always a good buy.
The selection wasn’t great and I didn’t find exactly what I was looking for. But there is always next week. And I like using my lunch hour to go hunting for great deals.
Bringing The Clothes Home
Overall, I am pretty happy with my shopping trip today. And now that I am home, I need to wash all of my treasures. I don’t like just hanging up the clothes and wearing them. I’m sorry (not sorry) but I have no idea who owned these clothes before me, so I want them to be clean before I wear them. So into the wash they go! And I will also use a little bit of some Downy Unstoppables to make everything smell good when I wash them. There is just something I love about the fresh and clean laundry smell!
And while my new clothes are washing, I go into my closet and find clothes that I no longer wear. I do this because if I bring in something new, something old has to go. I got into this habit about a year ago when we were planning on selling our house. My closet was packed with clothes I didn’t wear. So at that time I decided if I buy something new, I had to love it and be willing to get rid of something old. There is no reason to have 25 shirts that I never wear, right? So when I get something new, I either donate or sell something old. And if I can sell a few things, that will usually pay for my shopping trip, so I basically recycled the clothes and made some money to fund my shopping endeavor.
You Don’t Need To Buy Everything
Some of the things I have for my riding outfits I already had. All of my breeches are what I already owned. But the new components were from my lunch time shopping spree. I made the most of what I already had, and created a few new fall looks for around $50.00! Not a bad way to spend my lunch hour!
I love finding deals at the thrift store. And I really love not having to spend a lot of money for clothes that I will mainly be wearing in the barn. I’m not a fashion person, I have no fashion sense at all. But when I am making videos I feel the need to look at least somewhat presentable.
How about you? Do you buy new riding clothes for every season? Or do you just make do with what you have? I would love to know how you get ready for the new season. Leave your thoughts below on what your fall riding must have’s are.
