bug pellent natural fly repellent for horses

I have found my favorite fly repellent products ever made. Bug Pellent is a company that makes all natural fly repellent products for horses. These are a great option for horse owners, especially if you prefer not to cover your horses with chemicals. The maker reports it will keep away deer, house, stable, horse, and black flies as well as ticks, mosquitoes and gnats. I can tell you, yes, these products really repel all of these flying critters.

Bug Pellent Hanger

My most favorite item they make is a hanger that works incredibly well to keep the flies away.

The best part of this product is that they use a combination of essential oils to make it keep the flies away. And the second best thing about this hanger is how long it lasts! I bought two of these back in late April in anticipation of the upcoming fly season. I wasn’t sure if they would work, but I was willing to gift it a try. I mean, it had to work better that what I currently was using….nothing. So I thought, why not give it a try?

I have to say the hanger worked great. I tried to be cheap, and only use one in my 12 x 24 barn, but as the directions said, they really recommended in a space of that size, 2 hangers would work the best. And they were right. It really worked! And it continued to work all summer long. I just recently noticed an increase in the flies, and thankfully a refill set for the hangers came, and I am back in the no fly business again! I don’t know why, but this time of the year, the flies seem to get really bad. I don’t know if it is because they know their days are numbered or what, but they are even worse I think in the fall. But that’s ok now, because I have found these products!

When you first buy the hangers, they cost about $15.00 each. And then when you need refills, you get a two pack for about $20.00. Which is good for me, because I have 2 hanging in my barn right now.

But I don’t just reserve them for the horses, I use them in my garage as well. And ever since I put one in the garage, not only are there no flies, but other flying insects don’t venture in through the open door either.

Bug Pellent Fly and Tick Spray

I also received two bottles of their fly spray. This works as effectively as other fly sprays I have used, but again, it’s made from natural ingredients, which I love. The essential oils that make these products incredible are:

  • Cedar oil
  • Rosemary oil
  • Geraniol
  • Clove oil
  • Citronella oil
  • Peppermint oil (my absolute favorite essential oil)
  • Cinnamon oil
  • Lemongrass oil

There is also mineral oil, water and laurel sulfate. And that’s it, those are the ingredients. Have you ever read bottles of fly spray for their ingredients list? Have you seen some of the chemicals included on those lists? No thanks, I will choose Bug Pellent products, every time. Knowing that I am using natural ingredients when I am dousing my horse with fly spray several times a day makes me feel better than coating them chemicals I can’t even pronounce.

Bug Pellent Fly and Tick Gel

This is a really great product. You can use this on areas of your horse that you don’t want to spray, like his face, ears, or anywhere else. And if your horse is not fond of being sprayed, you can rub this gel on him, although it would be better in the long run to desensitize him to not liking the spray bottle. But that is a topic for another article, so I will leave it alone, for now.

This gel is more like a lotion, and it goes on easy, and it is not greasy at all. It comes in two sizes.

One is a smaller 8 oz size, which fits great in small spaces. And it comes in a 16 oz size with a pump. Personally, I prefer the larger size with the pump, because you don’t have to flip the lid on it, and you just use it like a lotion. You want to be sure to keep it away from your horses eyes, and mucous membranes (like his nose)but it is really nice to have a product like this to be able to apply a fly repellent near the ears, poll, and even on your horses face.

If you are looking for a natural fly repellent product that works, you should really consider these items. I would say my favorite item they make is the hanger, and I honestly feel anyone with horses should really use these in their barns. I have never seen such an effective product, and I will continually use these as long as they continue to make them! The fly spray is also good, and all natural. And the gel works great as well. And another thing that makes me continue to purchase and use these products is that they are made right here in the USA. I love buying American made!
