The Best of the Best Shedding Tools for 2024 – Shedding season is here! I am so happy about that. But I am not happy that it snowed last night. That is ok, though. Because it is warm enough that I can spend a little extra time getting the winter hair remnants off of both my horses.
I remember a long, long time ago, there were only two tools that were really meant for shedding. You either bought (or, in my case, borrowed) a shedding blade or an old-fashioned curry comb. My how times have changed. As a horse owner, you have a larger variety of shedding tools to choose from to help rid your horse of ultra-long winter hair.
But with all the choices, you may wonder which one is right for your horse. Well, let me break it down for you.
Best of the Best Shedding Tools for Horses
My goal is to help you find the best shedding tool for your horse. To achieve this, I’ve tested nearly every tool on the market. Here are my findings and personal thoughts on each one. And as always, I am including affiliate links. If you click on any of the links I have provided, I may receive a small commission from your purchase.
Sleek EZ
I think this is the best bang for your buck when it comes to a shedding tool. Especially if you want to see dramatic clumps of hair coming off your horse, it is very satisfying.
The tool is simple but effective. It’s a shaped hardwood block with a small blade on one end. The teeth on the blade look like those of a hacksaw but are not as sharp. In fact, when this first came out, I decided to try making my own sleek EZ using a hacksaw blade and a piece of wood. But then I finally caved in and bought a sleek EZ for myself.
The block is lightweight and very nice to hold. SleekEZ sells the tool in three sizes. I prefer the middle one because it fits perfectly into my hand and is extremely effective. They also come in blue and red now too. So if you want a colored version of this shedding tool, you have that option.
It works well for the fleshier parts of the horse, and both of my horses seem to enjoy being groomed with this tool. However, I would not recommend using the Sleek EZ on legs or sensitive body areas. I feel the blade dulls over time, but if you keep the blade free of debris, it should last a long time.
Farnam Slick ‘N Easy Grooming Block
Now, this little black block is extremely handy to have in your grooming kit year-round. I really like to use it during shedding season. The Slick ‘N Easy grooming block is a fantastic tool for getting your horse to a slicker coat. The block will remove stains, dirt, dust, and loose hair while providing a nice shine to the hair.
I like to use this, especially on my horse’s legs. It really helps to get the ‘canon crud’ off the lower legs. It is also wonderful for removing stains.
Jesse has white on his lower back legs, and well, he is not the neatest pooper. And sometimes, his manure is a little loose, which tends to get onto his legs. You can see this really well in the video I have up above.
But I can break out the grooming block, and it will remove the manure stains. It is gentle enough that I can use it on the inside of his legs as well, behind his tail, and remove any dried manure that may happen to get on his backside.
I know, probably a little too much information. But it works.
I wouldn’t recommend using it on the body if there is a lot of shedding going on because the hair will block up the grooming block. But it is a fantastic tool to remove sweat marks or even mud during the summer. It is gentle enough to use on their faces, too.
Striphair Gentle Groomer
Now, I wouldn’t solely claim that this is a shedding tool, but it is very handy to have during shedding season, as well as the rest of the year. But this grooming tool is a wonderful thing. It claims that is is 6 tools in one.
According to Betty’s Best, the Striphair gentle groomer is a shedding blade that removes dirt, a face groomer, a wash sponge, a sweat scraper, and a rub rag, all in one tool. So yeah, I guess it is 6 tools in one! And it does work very well for most of these purposes. I bought mine way back in 2019. This photo is a still from the video I did when I first used this tool. And it is still in perfect condition today, 5 years later!
The gentle groomer is a flexible rubber tool with no blade or bristles. I do really like using it for everything except a shedding blade. The reason is that you have to exert a lot of pressure on the tool to grab the loose hair. It does work, but not quite as effectively as the Sleek EZ. But it has many other uses as well. Which makes this tool a great addition to your grooming kit.

But where it lacks in shedding capabilities, it makes up for the areas that you can use it. Again, I like using this on my horses’ legs, all the way down to their hooves. It is safe to use on sensitive parts as well. I haven’t used it as a wash sponge, but I do use it to remove the excess water after bathing my horse. I don’t give them baths very often, but I am glad that I have this tool when I do because it really gets the water off.
The tool also claims to give extra shine to the horse, and I am torn on this claim. I can see where it could distribute the natural oils over the coat, but this is with applying a lot of pressure to the groomer when you are using it.
But overall I do feel that the Striphair gentle groomer is worth the price, and I am very glad to have it as a part of my grooming kit.
Shed Flower
Now, this little grooming tool is so handy to have in your grooming kit for shedding season. I got mine a few years ago in a heart to horse box, or a saddle box subscription box that I had. And even though it was years ago that I got it, it still works just as well today as it did when I first used it.
It is very gentle to use, even on the ticklish areas. Both of my horses seem to like it.
Posture Prep Cross Fiber Groomer Curry
This grooming tool reminds me a little bit of the rubber horse massagers from back in the 90’s. I wonder if they still make those?
Anyway, I bought this a year or so ago because I wanted to try it out. This tool is meant to help get your horse’s blood circulating and muscles warmed up before you even tack him up. I was intrigued, so I bought it.
And now, using it during shedding season, this is a super helper tool for getting the loose hair off of my horses. They get the added benefit of a massage.
And the teeth of the groomer are very interesting. They aren’t all the same. Some are little nubbies. While others are more pointed. The tool comes with an instruction guide telling you how to use it on your horse to help warm up their muscles before riding.
There are multiple versions you can buy on Amazon. They have one for horses that is around $12 which looks like it is a darker green now. They have one for dogs – which is light green, like the one I first bought for my horses. And they have a blue one that is for people that is the same price as the one for horses, about $12. I do no know the differences between the three tools, but I’m going to. Because my sheer curiosity is winning. I am going to buy the other two and see if there is any difference from what I already have.
Once I do, I will share my insights with you. I really love this groomer for my horses, so having a spare is a good idea. We have 2 furry dogs that might benefit from this groomer as well.

And, of course, there are a lot of other grooming and shedding tools to help you and your hairy horse this shedding season. But the ones that I have talked about are the ones that I use year after year. I have had the best results with these tools, so I think they would work for you and your horse, too.
I recently purchased the BioMane Grooming tool. This is an interesting tool. And I wanted to see how this worked during shedding season, and it does work very well. But it seems like it has better uses than seeing dramatic clumps of hair falling off of my horse’s back.
Watch Out for Imposters
I have bought a few of the ‘knockoffs’—you know, the ones that imitate the original—because I want to see if they are worth the investment.
So far, I haven’t found any that work well. But I would encourage you to stick with the originals of all of these items. They truly work, and the people who worked really hard to come up with the idea for the tool deserve my money and my recommendation.
Do you have a favorite shedding tool that you always gravitate to every year? Let me know!
Happy Shedding Season!
