Tack Room Makeover
I wanted to do a tack room makeover. The days are getting longer, which means soon I will be able to work with my horses when I get home from work. I am so excited for this! There is just something wonderful about being able to get home and ride for a bit in the evenings.
But to make this happen, my tack room needs a makeover.
The winter months are harsh where I live. My tack room is not heated, so it freezes in there. So-every November, I start bringing all my tack and liquid items into my house. And when I do this, my tack room becomes an even bigger mess than it was before. And every year I promise myself I will not let this happen, and I will stay organized. But that never happens!
Until this year!
Deciding on What to do
When I put stuff in my tack room, I didn’t really know how to be organized. I had furniture that had been moved from our house into the tack room. It looked nice, but the pieces took up valuable space that I could be using better. So when the weather was bad, and there wasn’t a lot of day light, I used my time to make new ‘furniture’ for my tack room.
I had been using folding saddle stands, which took up a lot of space. My tack room was more of a catch-all space for excess stuff.

I had hung up hooks randomly, without really thinking about how I would use them.
I made a saddle rack for the wall, which will take up a lot less space. And I made some heavy-duty bridle racks. I did keep a saddle pad rack that I had already made, along with an old medicine cabinet and my boot holders.

I didn’t want to hang heavy winter blankets on the entire wall, so I got a wire rack shelf, and a chrome blanket hanging rack from Riding Warehouse for $20.00. I also found a blanket bar to hang up with the sole purpose to hold my large collection of squirt bottles.

I still have all of drawer organizers, along with my homemade first aid kit. I need a lot of first aid supplies, especially owning Ethan. This horse gets injured more than any horse I have ever owned.

I added a bunch of hooks, and even had space for my tack trunk that I had made this past winter.
Planning the Space
I thought a lot of how I would lay everything out BEFORE I put things back! I want to stay organized, and I want it to look nice. I added some left-over peel-and-stick tile flooring that I had from Home Depot to finish off the floor. It isn’t perfect, but it is better than it was.

I must say I am happy with how this turned out!
And I also have another reason why I wanted to make my tack room organized and useful…

We are getting our house ready to put on the market! Which means I really want to enhance what our property has, so it can be a dream home for someone else. And in the area we live, horse property is in high demand. So if I can make a great tack room, all the better for the sale of our house.
The tack room is just one of many projects that needed to be completed, so now I can check that off my list. But while we are searching for our dream home, and completing the other projects that need to be done, I will be able to enjoy the space, and keep it organized. So it’s a win-win for me!
The other projects I want to complete around the barn are:
- New kick-wall in Frisby’s stall
- Re-configure lighting in the barn (and add to the tack room)
- Mats down in the stalls
- Lay a brick patio in front of the tack room door

Thankfully, these should be pretty simple to do, and once they are done they will make our house more ‘horse-friendly’. And I will get to enjoy the completed projects while we continue our search for our dream home….please have an indoor riding arena…..
Have you wanted to make over your tack room? If you could, what would change about your tack room? I would love to know, leave a comment below!

Hi Lisa
I really like your tack room. Mine really needs a makeover so i think i will pop online to my favourite tack shop and buy a few hooks to hang things up. I really like how you organise everything so well and how you work so hard.Keep up the amazing work!
Thank you Lucy!
Right now my “tack space” is a designated corner of my barn but we are getting ready to actually build a real tack room! It’s not a huge space, around 6′ x 8′, so I”m going to need to make the most of my wall space and you have given me some great ideas – especially that hanging saddle pad rack! Fortunately I have loft storage space so seasonal things like blankets, etc will go up there in totes. I love the idea of the medicine cabinet so I’ll be on the lookout at yard sales and flea markets!
Trying to make the most of a small space will make you VERY creative! Congratulations on getting your official tack room! So exciting!!!!
