When you buy new riding boots, they don’t usually come with the boot trees. What is a boot tree you may be wondering? A boot tree helps to keep the shape of tall boots. And if you don’t keep boot trees in your tall boots, they will soon lose their shape, and the leg part will just fall over, because they aren’t supported. Tall boots are not cheap, however, I do have a cheap alternative for you to make your own boot trees!
How To Make Your Own Boot Trees
Making tall boot trees is really simple, and will only cost you about $3.00. This is one way you can save money, because if you buy boot trees for your boots, they start at $25.00 and go up in price.
You will need a pool noodle, and a knife. That’s it! No fancy equipment needed to make these! And it is so simple.

Cut The Noodle
First, put the pool noodle next to your boot, on the outside. Measure from the heel to the top of the boot. Then, depending on how tall you want the tree to be, cut the pool noodle so that it is about 3” to 4” taller than the boot. With your cut piece, measure one more piece of pool noodle, and cut it to match the first cut piece.

Shave The Noodle
Now carefully begin to shave away the bottom of the pool noodle. You want to taper the bottom that will be at the heel of the boot. Do this carefully, and methodically. You can always cut more if it is too thick, so put the noodle into the boot to see how it fits. If it isn’t fitting snugly into the bottom of your boot, shave off a little bit more of the noodle until it fits completely into the heel of the boot.

Finish The Boot Tree
Once you are happy with how it is fitting, your boot tree is done! Now just do the same thing to the other piece, and you will have a pair of boot trees.
And something extra you can do to make the boot trees look complete, is to put your boot socks over them. This will not only make them look better, but also keep your boot socks with your boots so you will always know where they are!

This is a really quick and easy project you can do to keep your boots standing tall, and it will help to keep the shape of the tall boots. And this isn’t just for your tall riding boots, you can make boot trees for all of your boots to keep them standing tall.

If you were looking for a unique gift idea for your favorite horse person, this would be something inexpensive you could make, and then you could add a pair of boot socks too. You would have a thoughtful homemade gift that could be created for less than $20.00, and it is something that would be used.
