Yes, the time has come, and after doing some searching, I have found a new horse! And it just worked out that he will be coming to our home, right before Christmas. So it is almost as if I am getting a horse for Christmas. And bringing home a new horse feels really special this time of year.
Did you ever dream about that when you were younger? Waking up, and having a note telling you to go outside, because that’s where your Christmas present is? I had that dream a lot as a horse crazy teenager. Always thinking how awesome it would be to wake up Christmas morning, and finding a horse with a big red bow around his neck.
While I realize that isn’t a good or practical idea, it’s still pretty cool to know my new friend will be arriving the weekend before Christmas.
Making Preparations
Once he is officially here, I will tell you all about him. But in the mean time, I have to get everything ready for him, and I am starting with walking the property.
Not only do I want to make sure everything is safe for my horses, I also have been looking for anything that could potentially cause either of them harm.
I have been doing this more frequently after Ethan passed. I may be hypersensitive, but there have been things I have been noticing in my pasture that shouldn’t be there. For example, on the Fourth of July, I found something in the horses stalls that shouldn’t have been there, like someone was messing around with my horses.

And I was walking around the morning of the fifth of July, and there was a plastic bag, the kind that you get at Walmart, or Target and it was filled with excrement. Someone had thrown that into my pasture. Who would do something like that?
Mean People Suck
And one time when I went to ride Frisby, I moved my mounting block and there was a biscuit, the people kind, half way under the mounting block. So it seems someone is throwing food at my horses for some reason.
So whenever I get a moment, I walk throughout the pasture, and my riding arena looking for anything that could potentially cause harm to my horses.

I bought a sign that tells people not to feed or touch the horses. I’m not very happy that I have to tell my neighbors to back the F$#% off, and leave my horses alone. It’s very frustrating.

I also have been locking my arena, which is Frisby favorite place to stand during the day. Because the arena is at the edge of our property, and along the road, which is where someone could mess with him. I’m thinking about buying another Ring camera to keep at the end of our driveway, but for now I just try to keep Frisby away from trouble.
The Barn
Getting the barn ready is a little bit easier, because it’s all done. I just have to bed down the stall, and make sure the corral panels are secure.

I also washed the walls of the stall, and built up a bank of shavings.
Frisby also got a fresh deep bed of shavings. I think he is happy about that.
And I have anticipated getting another horse, so I have been building up my hay supply, as well as shavings.
My new horse is more accustom to being tied in cross ties rather than being straight tied, so I will be building a set of cross ties when the weather gets warmer. But for now I will have to figure out where to put cross ties for him.
And even though I really want to reorganize my tack room, it’s sort of organized for now. It should be fine, well until my new horse comes home.
I have a stockpile of first aid stuff, just in case, and I have made room for my new horses blankets, and supplies. I will have time to play even more once he gets here.
New Feed Stuff

One thing that is different is the type of feed that Plezant (my new horse!) eats. He has some dental concerns, meaning his teeth are worn down, so his diet is mainly pelleted feed that has been turned into a mash. He eats softened orchard grass pellets, so I have been buying bags of pellets and beet pulp shreds in anticipation of his arrival.
I like to be prepared, and I never want to be without food for the horses regardless of what they eat.
Hurry Up and Wait
And now I just have to wait for Plezant to be delivered. He is coming home on Saturday, which is a day after this post is coming out! I am excited for him to come home. I am really excited to share him with you, and once he is here I promise I will!

It’s been difficult for Frisby not having a friend. I know he’s lonely. But hopefully he will be just as excited to have a new friend. I hope they get along. He is pretty mellow when it comes to the pecking order. So I am fairly confident he will just be happy to have a friend.
I keep telling him that I found a friend for him. And while he doesn’t understand the excitement I have, I think he will come Saturday.
Bringing Home A New Horse
My heart and home are ready to bring Plezant home. I am really looking forward to the possibilities, and adding a new equine friend to our family. And I feel I am as ready as I can be while I am counting down the days until he gets here.
The weather is forecasted to be great this weekend. So hopefully I will be able to get a lot of pictures, and videos of the introduction between Plezant and Frisby. We shall see what happens!
But hopefully this gives you a little bit of an idea of what I am doing to get ready for a new horse, just in case you are getting ready to do the same thing.

Congratulations on getting Plezant! Get a couple of Great Pyrenees dogs to guard your horses. The crazies need to go away. And the dogs can keep your horses safe from any natural predators too.
Thank you! I must admit, I feel a bit guilty right now, replacing Ethan, But Frisby seems to be very happy to have a new friend. And that makes me really happy. Plezant is a good match and I hope to have lots of fun with him, as well as giving him a very good home. 🙂
Congratulations! I also received an equine “gift” this Christmas (but on December 22nd) and I agree this seems like an extra special time of the year to get this “gift”. I’m also a mature lady but I felt like a little girl all over again. Its been about 20 years since I last had a horse so I feel like I’m learning all over again. I look forward to further posts from you on your progress with Plezant.
Congratulations to you too! Isn’t it exciting???!?!?! I completely understand the feeling like a little girl again, it’s a good feeling isn’t it? Getting a horse for Christmas was something I had always dreamed about when I was young and even though I realize that’s not a good idea, getting the horse at Christmas time sure felt like I got him for Christmas. I hope you have a lot of fun, and your new horse brings you as much joy as Plezant has brought both me and Frisby.
