When Is International Helmet Awareness Day?

Ok, I’m confused, I thought International Helmet Awareness Day was back in June, but I guess I was wrong, because it seems like it is right now, like today! So I am jumping on the bandwagon, and touting some things I have learned, and why wearing a helmet when you ride your horse is a good decision.

Safety First

I think we all know that riding horses comes with an associated risk. I mean, they are big animals, and accidents happen. So why set yourself up for an injury that doesn’t need to happen? Wearing a helmet while riding is like an insurance policy. You may never need it, but if something happens, you will be glad you were wearing it.

I have been wearing a helmet for a very long time. I won’t get on my horse unless I’m wearing my helmet. It has become just a part of my riding gear, just like my boots and breeches. It’s natural to put on my helmet every time I ride.

And I’m not here to tell you that YOU have to wear a helmet. That’s your decision. I’m just sharing with you why I choose to wear mine.

Affordable Riding Helmets

And there are so many choices when it comes to helmets. You can find them as low as $25.00 all the way up to over $1000. But the best helmet is the one you will wear, in my opinion. And I can’t tell you about all riding helmets because I haven’t worn or owned all of them. But I can give you my feedback on the helmets I have owned, and the ones I currently owned.

IRH Equi-Pro SV Wide Sun Brim Riding Helmet $69.95

This is my most recent riding helmet, and I LOVE it! The helmet is super comfortable to wear, and my head doesn’t sweat like crazy. For me, this is a definite plus. And it’s really affordable. Riding Warehouse has it right now for $69.95. That’s a good deal! I also found it at Amazon for $56.95, depending on the color you want. Yes, they have different colors too!

I bought mine in grey. I think it does reflect the heat of the sun a little bit, maybe because of the color?

And it also has an extra wide sun brim which is really nice.

It’s very comfortable to wear. Wait, I said that already. But it is worth mentioning again. I don’t have any cons to report personally. But I do know my friend Vickie bought one, and she didn’t like the way it looked. The sizing might be a little bit off, I’m not sure. But I wear a m/l size and it fits my head perfectly.

One K Defender – $269.95

I bought this helmet a long time ago – like almost 4 years ago! Which means it is getting close to the end of it’s recommended lifespan. And thankfully, it has never been involved in a fall. If it had, I would have replaced it. But this was the first ‘expensive’ and trendy helmet I bought. And I really do like it. It fits my head very well and it looks nice. Well I think it looks nice.

It is comfortable to wear, most of the time. But one thing I notice more with this helmet vs. my IRH helmet is how hot my head gets in it. Even when I would wear it to my riding lessons, in the wintertime, my head still got really sweaty in my One K helmet. I think it weighs a little bit more too.

But that being said, this is a really nice helmet. And as long as you aren’t riding in the sweltering heat of summer, I feel it would be a good helmet for most people. But the price tag might put you off. At the time of writing this, the One K Defender helmet costs around $269.95 no matter where you buy it. So it’s a lot more than the IRH helmet. But it definitely fits the traditional style that many people are looking for.

Splurge Helmets

So those are my 2 current helmets that I have. But if I had an endless supply of money, and price didn’t matter, here are a few helmets I would love to try out.

Samshield Miss Shield Shadowmatt Helmet – 5 Crystals – $699.00

This helmet is just so pretty. It is inspired by classic riding helmets with a longer visor for sun protection and a dash of sparkle with crystal accents right at the vent.

I have never worn a Samshield helmet, but I see a lot of them at the horse shows. And the crystal accents on the front of the helmet are just so glamorous. I love a little bit of bling!

One K Defender Series Celestial Riding Helmet $429.95

Ok, talk about bling! If you want bling, this is your helmet. This helmet boasts a simple matte look, but with modernized fashion, tasteful flash, and advanced technology for today’s most discerning rider. The helmet features a sleek injection-molded outer shell with five discreet vents and stainless steel mesh for maximum coolness and comfort. And let’s talk about the bling shall we?

Synthetic suede covered, painted gloss shell which gives some shine. But then the sparkle stone top panel with shiny chrome accents just puts this helmet over the top in my opinion, which is a good thing!

When Is International Helmet Awareness Day?

All right that is about all I can think of when it comes to different styles of riding helmets. And give you some honest feedback on the helmets I have had. I still haven’t been able to find out the ‘official’ International Helmet Day for 2021. But anytime I can talk about safety around horses and riding, no matter what day it is, I am there!

How about you? What’s your favorite riding helmet?
